Put in to bat first, India made 205-5 in their 20 overs, riding on the back of Rohit's blistering 92 off 40 balls. The knock included a 29-run over against Mitchell Starc and a 100-metre six off Pat Cummins, which was also his 200th six in T20Is.
In response, Australia lost David Warner in the first over, edging an outswinger by Arshdeep Singh to first slip. In the second over, India got another chance. Mitchell Marsh was hurried by a Jasprit Bumrah bouncer as he gloved an attempted pull shot. The ball ballooned in the air towards backward square leg. Rishabh Pant tried to make his way through to catch the ball, but stumbled while sprinting, resulting in him pulling out of the catch at the last moment as he casually slapped away the ball one bounce.
Pant's effort drew the ire of the Indian side as Rohit and Bumrah were both left shocked with hands in the air. Rohit was also seen angrily yelling expletives in his direction.
Marsh received another reprieve in the next over, as Arshdeep dropped a tough return catch off his own bowling. Travis Head and Marsh took advantage of the chances as Australia raced away to 83-1 after eight overs. Marsh was eventually dismissed courtesy of a spectacular catch by Axar Patel at the square leg boundary in the ninth over.
