Watch: Phil Salt smashed his IPL teammate Mitchell Starc for a mammoth 106-metre six during his quick knock of 37 in the 2024 T20 World Cup on Saturday (June 8).
Phil Salt, who recently played in the Indian Premier League, was in sensational form for his side Kolkata Knight Riders, playing a pivotal role in their title-winning campaign. Salt made 435 runs at a strike rate of 182, stitching together game-changing partnerships with Sunil Narine at the top of the order before departing for international duty.
Mitchell Starc was another overseas player who played a crucial role in KKR’s win. Famously acquired for INR 24.75 crore at the auction, Starc picked up 3-34 in Qualifier 1 and 2-14 in the final to help shoot out Sunrisers Hyderabad for low scores twice.
On Saturday, Salt emerged triumphant in the mini-battle when he hit Starc for a huge six. Chasing 202 for a win, England got off to a fine start, making 73 for the first wicket in 7.1 overs as openers Salt and Jos Buttler (42 in 28) laid the platform.
Salt got going with a big hit in the third over of the innings: Starc sent down a fuller delivery on the stumps that he Salt lofted towards wide long-on. The ball ended up on the top tier of one of the stands, and it was later revealed to be a big 106-metre six, the longest of the edition till then before Rovman Powell bettered it with a 107-metre hit against Uganda.
Despite the start, England fell 36 runs short of the target in the end, and now have one point from two games in their group.
