Watch: Pat Cummins became the seventh bowler to complete a hat-trick in the men’s ICC T20 World Cup, dismissing Mahmdullah, Mahedi Hasan and Towhid Hridoy with three successive deliveries over the span of two overs.

Australia’s first outing in the Super Eight of the 2024 T20 World Cup was against Bangladesh at Saint Lucia. The 2021 champions got the early advantage after Mitchell Starc sent back Tanzid Hasad on just the third ball of the innings. Bangladesh could never recover, slipping to 103-5 in 16.1 overs.

Bangladesh could not finish the innings on a high either, with Pat Cummins wreaking havoc, scalping three wickets in as many deliveries to pick up the first hat-trick of the edition. He first sent back Mahmudullah with a slower delivery outside the offside, which the batter dragged back onto his stump. The next ball, the last of the 18th over, was back of a length that Mahedi Hasan arched back to Adam Zampa at third.

Cummins returned to bowl the 20th over, and completed the hat-trick with the first ball. Towhid Hridoy scooped a slow, good-length ball over short fine-leg, and Josh Hazlewood took an easy catch. It was Cummins’s first ever T20I hat-trick and only the second by an Australian in T20 World Cups, after Brett Lee in the first edition in 2007. Lee’s hat-trick was also, incidentally, against Bangladesh.

Bangladesh ended with 140-8 in their 20 overs, with Cummins ending with 3-29.
