Watch: Keshav Maharaj dismissed Rohit Sharma and Rishabh Pant in the second over to give South Africa an early advantage during the 2024 T20 World Cup final against India.

Batting first, India were off to a flier, courtesy of Virat Kohli, who hit Marco Jansen for three fours in a 15-run opening over, the most expensive in the tournament so far. But Maharaj got South Africa back in the game with a double strike in the second over in the form of Rohit and Pant.

Rohit started the second over with two consecutive fours by playing a cut followed by a reverse sweep. Maharaj soon had his revenge. Off the third ball floated slowly outside off stump, Rohit tried to continue putting pressure by bringing out the sweep. He ended up hitting Maharaj straight to Heinrich Klaasen at square leg to be back in the pavilion for nine runs off five balls.

India were further pushed to the backfoot as Pant, in at three, fell off the last ball of the over without opening his account. Pant too attempted a sweep and top-edged the ball to hand an easy catch to wicketkeeper Quinton de Kock.

Suryakumar Yadav (three off four) holed out Kagiso Rabada to fine leg and yet again Klaasen was the catcher. India finished the powerplay with 45 for the loss of three wickets.
