Watch: Jos Buttler smashed five sixes in five balls to book England’s spot in the T20 World Cup semi-finals and put his side in with a chance of topping the group.
After a stumble against South Africa, the defending champions found the perfect response, keeping USA to 115 and then gunning down the total in quick time.
Buttler was the main man in the chase, Phil Salt content to take a backseat in a century opening stand. The England captain finished unbeaten with 83 not out off 38 balls to his name, blasting five sixes in a row off Harmeet Singh as he looked to finish the game off in a hurry.
Another Buttler boundary brought England victory with 10 overs and two balls to spare. The victory margin was comfortably enough to ensure England will make it through the group. If West Indies fail to win, England and South Africa will go through on points, while if West Indies beat the Proteas, their net run rate will stay below England’s.
It also gives England a chance of topping the group. In the case of a West Indies win, England’s net run rate could be high enough to see them take first place, likely allowing them to avoid India in the semi-finals.
Earlier, Adil Rashid claimed two wickets to peg the tournament co-hosts back before Chris Jordan took four wickets in five balls, including England’s first men’s T20I hat-trick, as USA collapsed from 115-5 to 115 all out.
