Reeza Hendricks lost his wicket to Jasprit Bumrah in the IND v SA final

Watch: Jasprit Bumrah produced a near-unplayable delivery to clean bowl Reeza Hendricks in the 2024 T20 World Cup final at Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados.

After winning the toss in the T20 World Cup final, India posted 176-7 against South Africa. Virat Kohli made 59-ball 76, his slowest T20I fifty –an innings in three parts – and Axar Patel 47 in 31 balls. For South Africa, Keshav Maharaj picked up 2-23 and Anrich Nortje 2-26.

South Africa began their chase cautiously against Arshdeep Singh. The first five balls fetched them two runs before Reeza Hendricks sent the sixth ball of the first over to the point boundary.

Jasprit Bumrah opened bowling at the other end. Quinton de Kock saw off the first ball before running a leg-bye. Then Bumrah produced one of the best balls of the World Cup.

Another day, another Bumrah special

The ball pirched on leg and middle and swung away. Hendricks, nearly rooted to the crease, played along the line, but the ball moved enough to beat the outside edge and took the top of the off stump – in other words, the perfect delivery. Hendricks’ lack of footwork perhaps took some sheen away from the dismissal, but it is hard to see how anyone could have played it better.

Aiden Markram followed soon, but Tristan Stubbs (31 in 21 balls) took the game to India. At the time of writing. South Africa were 81-3 after 10 overs with de Kock (30) and Heinrich Klaasen (8) at the crease. They need 96 in 60 balls.
