Watch: Bangladesh missed an easy run-out chance after a horrible mix-up by Afghanistan batters Rahmanullah Gurbaz and  Azmatullah Omarzai during the last Super Eights fixture of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

With India already in the semi-finals, the second spot from Group 1 was up for grabs, with Afghanistan, Australia, and Bangladesh standing a chance to qualify.

The high-stakes Super Eights clash saw a horrible mix-up between the Afghanistan batters, but the Bangladesh fielders’ error of judgment resulted in an easy run-out chance going down the drain.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz cut to backward point and took off for a single before realising the run was not there, but Azmatullah Omarzai had already come halfway down the wicket answering Gurbaz’s call. Rishad Hossain intercepted the ball and threw it – but towards the striker’s end, where both batters ended up. In the meantime, Gurbaz had got back to the crease before Omarzai.

As the ball missed the stumps, both batters set off for the non-striker’s end before Omarzai decided otherwise. Gurbaz finally reached the other end safely.

Bangladesh were erratic on the field. Soumya Sarkar took a magnificent catch to dismiss Gulbadin Naib, but as a team, they missed run out chances at both ends. Shakib Al Hasan looked visibly frustrated, owing to the poor effort.

Afghanistan played 66 dot balls in their innings and could only manage 115-5. Bangladesh are in with a chance if they gunned down the target inside 12.1 overs.
