Watch: Arshdeep Singh became the first India bowler to pick a wicket with the first ball in a men’s T20 World Cup game, trapping the USA’s Shayan Jahangir plumb in front before setting off on a celebrappeal on Wednesday (June 12).
The left-armer was given the first over after India won the toss and opted to bowl in New York. He was up against Jahangir, who was playing just his second T20I and has previously represented Pakistan in under-19 cricket.
After making 18 in his first T20I, Jahangir failed to get off the mark against India today, falling first ball to Arshdeep, who dismissed him with a sharp nip-backer that caught the batter on his crease. The ball struck him on the knee-roll in front of the off-stump, and Arshdeep immediately went off in celebration without turning around to take a look at the umpire, who raised his finger soon after.
He struck six balls later in the same over, getting Andries Gous out with a short ball that had extra bounce, as the USA succumbed to 3-2 in the first over. He also returned to pick up the wicket of Nitish Kumar and Harmeet Singh, ending with figures of 4-9 in his four overs. USA finishwd with 110 in their 20 overs.
