Aiden Markram catch vs England

Watch: Aiden Markram took another match-defining catch in the final over, this time during the South Africa v England Super Eights clash at the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Batting first in St Lucia, South Africa were restricted to 163-6 despite being 80-0 after nine overs. Adil Rashid's tight spell of 1-20 from four overs, coupled with Jos Buttler's brilliance behind the stumps helped England keep South Africa to a total that looked under par on the highest scoring venue of the tournament.

However, England stumbled in the run-chase. By the second ball of the 11th over, they had lost half their side for just 61 runs and were staring down the barrel. Liam Livingstone (33 off 17) and Harry Brook (53 off 37) then stitched a 78-run partnership for the fifth wicket in just seven overs to give England hope.

The equation came down to 14 needed off the last over, to be bowled by Anrich Nortje. With Brook on strike, the game was still well within England's grasp when Markram took a fine backward-running catch to dismiss the set batter and turn the game towards South Africa.

Brook skied a full-ish delivery by Nortje, looking to go over mid-off in the circle, but couldn't time it well. Markram ran back 18 metres and took a two-handed catch over his shoulders, diving with the perfect technique so as to prevent the ball from spilling out.

Earlier in the tournament, Markram had pulled off a leaping catch on the boundary against Bangladesh when they needed six off two balls.

Sam Curran and Jofra Archer managed only six more runs as England lost by seven.
