Watch: Phil Salt hammered Romario Shepherd for 30 runs in an over to take England to a winning position during their T20 World Cup 2024 Super Eights fixture against West Indies today (June 19).

England, at 141-2 after the 15th over, were well within reach of their 181-run target. Jos Buttler, pinned lbw by Roston Chase for a 22-ball 25, and Moeen Ali, dismissed by Andre Russell, were the two wickets to fall. In at four, Jonny Bairstow’s unbeaten 48 off 26 turbocharged England’s run-rate.

With 40 needed in the last five overs, Salt, playing the second fiddle until then, was batting on 49 off 37. He teed off thereafter and killed the chase almost instantly.

Against Romario Shepherd in the 16th over, Salt dispatched the first two balls bowled on full length for a four and a six. Shephard tried to compensate and bowled a bouncer off the third ball but Salt stayed back and ramped the slower ball over the wicketkeeper. The next two deliveries yielded consecutive sixes, one over wide long off and another sailing over deep backward square-leg.

A clueless Shepherd erred in length, bowling a full toss off the last ball to concede yet another four. 30 runs came from the over as England kept marching on. Shepherd's two-over spell read 0-41. It was the most expensive over bowled by a West Indies bowler in a men's T20 World Cup game.

England gunned down the total in 17.3 overs with eight wickets left. Salt finished on 87 not out off 47.
