Today's T20 World Cup match preview
West Indies v USA, Super Eights
Where: Kensington Oval, Bridgetown, Barbados
When: June 21, 8.30pm local time
The party had to stop some time. USA had been the T20 World Cup’s surprise package, with their journey to the Super Eights the story of the tournament. They beat Canada in the latest installment of cricket’s oldest rivalry, then edged out Pakistan in a thriller before the rain confirmed their passage to the next round. But defeat to South Africa put a dampener on their semi-final hopes, and now they need another upset or two to stay alive.
West Indies are also in need of a win, following a thumping by a reinvigorated England. They cruised through the group of death, easing past New Zealand before swatting aside Afghanistan, but now have little margin for error. Victory would set up a mouthwatering clash against South Africa, but defeat would be near fatal.
Both USA and West Indies have been the subject of some of cricket’s most vexing questions in modern times. After a multitude of failed attempts, is an unlikely charge on home soil what the sport needed to finally exploit the great untapped resource of the States? Or else, could a title charge in the Caribbean be the thing that reawakens the slumbering West Indies giant?
T20 World Cup results: Who won yesterday's match?
England vs South Africa: South Africa won by 7 runs
Bangladesh vs Australia: Australia won by 28 runs (DLS method)
Who are the key players?
Nicholas Pooran
The former captain has thrived after being pushed up to No.3. He blitzed 98 against Afghanistan after an early wicket, pushing West Indies on to the highest score of the competition so far, and had got himself set against England before a superb Jofra Archer over saw him off and changed the course of the game. With Brandon King ruled out due to injury, Pooran's wicket will only take on more importance. How he balances that fact with his free-scoring nature could be decisive.
Saurabh Netravalkar
It's impossible to look past USA's seam-bowling revelation. By now, you'll know the narrative: playing against Babar for India at the Under-19 World Cup, making the journey to the US to pursue a career in coding, and moonlighting as a cricketer after his day job at Oracle. But with each spell, the back story takes a back seat and his skills assume centre-stage. Despite defeat, he was exceptional again against South Africa, taking two wickets, conceding two boundaries and going at under a run a ball despite bowling in the powerplay and at the death. If USA are to spring a surprise, they will need to keep West Indies' big hitters quiet, and Netravalkar is surely the key to doing so.
