In the T20 World Cup history, South Africa have enjoyed the upper hand with three wins over Sri Lanka, who have prevailed only once. Meanwhile, tournament debutants Uganda will play Afghanistan for the first time in the format.
Earlier in March this year, Wanindu Hasaranga escaped from a ban for the first few matches of the tournament, and is available to lead Sri Lanka in their campaign opener. Hasaranga is Sri Lanka's trump card in their spin flotilla alongside Maheesh Theekshana. Angelo Mathews’ late comeback into the T20I outfit also bolsters their line up.
For South Africa, Anrich Nortje, who is making a comeback after a long injury hiatus, is expected to feature in the lineup. Firebrand pacer Kagiso Rabada was ruled out midway through IPL 2024 due to a soft tissue infection in his lower limb. He is likely to be fit for the match.
In the second fixture of the day, Afghanistan may continue to open with Gulbadin Naib, who scored a 30-ball 69 in the warm-up match against Scotland. In that case, Ibrahim Zardan will bat at No.3.
