New Zealand fast bowler Tim Southee was sanctioned by the ICC for smashing a hand sanitizer dispenser during the T20 World Cup match against West Indies.
In their media release on Friday (June 14), ICC specified that Southee had breached Article 2.2 of the Code of Conduct, relating to "abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match.”
The incident in question took place during the 18th over of New Zealand's innings against West Indies, after Southee was dismissed for a golden duck, caught and bowled by Alzarri Joseph to leave his side eight down with 42 more runs to get off 13 balls for victory. On his way back to the dressing room, the Kiwi bowler smashed a hand sanitizer dispenser.

It was reported to the ICC via the umpires' match report, and match referee David Boon imposed the following sanctions on Southee: an official reprimand and one demerit point to be added to Southee's disciplinary record. It was the player's first offence in the last 24 months. Southee admitted to the offence and did not challenge the sanctions, meaning there was no need for a formal hearing to take place.
In the match, West Indies were reduced to 30-5 in the first innings, with Southee picking up two of those wickets. They recovered well, though, thanks to Sherfane Rutherford's magnificent 68* to post 149-9. In reply, New Zealand's chase never got going and despite a few big blows at the end from Mitchell Santner, they fell 13 runs short.
