The ninth edition of the T20 World Cup began on June 1 — here’s a look at the points table for the first round of T20 World Cup 2024, including net run rate and standings, which are updated after every game.
The latest T20 World Cup will be played between June 1 and 29. 55 matches will be held during this period, across various venues in the USA and the Caribbean islands. The first semi-final will be played in Trinidad and Tobago on June 26 and the other in Guyana on June 27. Kensington Oval in Barbados will host the title decider clash on June 29.
The tournament will be contested among 20 teams, making it the biggest in its history. The participants are equally divided into four groups. The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super 8 stage, forming two groups. Unlike previous editions, Super 8 groups are not dependent upon where the teams will finish during the group stage, as they will retain their first-round seeding. The scheduling has led to a lot of criticism.
England enter the tournament as defending champions, having defeated runners-up Pakistan in the final in 2022. England (2010 and 2022) and West Indies (2012 and 2016) are the only two nations to win the title twice.
In a revival of the oldest cricket rivalry, co-hosts USA started with a comprehensive win over Canada in the tournament opener. Vice-captain Aaron Jones starred with an unbeaten blazing 94 to gun down 194 in 17.4 overs with seven wickets remaining. Jones' 40-ball stay included 10 sixes, the joint-most in a men's T20 World Cup innings alongside Chris Gayle.
