While ICC regulations require teams to name 15-member squads, Namibia have unveiled a 16-player group, citing the need for an extra player for the four warm-up matches before the start of the tournament. They have until May 25 to release their final 15.
Promising all-rounder Erasmus will lead the side, with JJ Smit as his deputy. The biggest omission from the squad is all-rounder Nicol Loftie-Eaton, who captained the team during their unbeaten run at last year’s ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Africa Qualifier on home soil. Loftie-Eaton, who hit the fastest T20I century against Nepal in February, is currently the subject of disciplinary proceedings and has been overlooked.
Pikky Ya France is another major name excluded from the experienced contingent. He has been part of Namibia’s outfit since 2011 and featured in Namibia’s 2021 T20 World Cup campaign.
Nine players from that previous group have made it to the current edition, with T20 globetrotter David Wiese being the most notable inclusion.
Fast bowler Jack Brassell, who was part of Namibia’s Under-19 World Cup squad in South Africa this year, has earned a spot. Brassell took the joint-most wickets in the tournament, scalping six times at 15.66.
