In the 2024 T20 World Cup, India secured qualification to the Super Eights stage from Group A as they defeated Ireland, Pakistan and USA before their final match against Canada was washed out. But how have the 2007 champions performed at this stage of the tournament in previous editions?
Ever since its inception, the T20 World Cup has undergone various format changes, as well as changes in the number of participants. As a result, the Super Eight stage has not been a feature of every edition. In fact, this is the first time since 2012 that the second stage of the T20 World Cup is a Super Eight.
In 2014 and 2016, the second part of the tournament was a Super Ten, while 2021 and 2022 saw this change to a Super Twelve. India made it to the final, semi-final, group stage and semi-final of these tournaments respectively.
How have India performed in the Super Eight stage at previous T20 World Cups?
2007
In the first edition of the T20 World Cup, India qualified to Group E in the Super Eights, and were placed alongside New Zealand, South Africa and England. They lost a high-scoring game to the Kiwis by 10 runs but bounced back with convincing wins over South Africa and England. They finished top of the group, before going on to beat Australia in the semi-final and Pakistan in the final to lift the cup.
2009
Two years later in England, India once again made it to Group E. However, their performances left much to be desired this time around. Against West Indies, they failed to defend 153 before falling short by three runs against England. India then failed to take even a consolation win, as 131 proved too high a target for them against South Africa.

2010
In 2010, it was a similar story to 2009 for India. Qualifying to Group F of the Super Eights, they suffered a massive 49-run defeat to Australia first up, before losing by 14 runs to tournament hosts West Indies. Their last game went down to the wire, and it needed a last-ball six from Chamara Kapugedera to take Sri Lanka over the line. Once again, they were knocked out.
2012
In their most recent Super Eights appearance, India made it to Group F but took a thrashing from Australia, who chased down 141 in just 14.4 overs to win by nine wickets and condmen India to a seventh consecutive Super Eights loss. They did bounce back though, beating Pakistan before winning a tense game against South Africa. However, the net run rate hit from the Australia loss was too big for India to recover from, and they were dumped out after the Super Eights for a third time in a row.
