The ECB have confirmed that players who are part of the England T20 World Cup 2024 squad will have to return early from the 2024 IPL.

Defending champions England named their 15-member squad for the 2024 Men’s T20 World Cup today (April 30). Notable names include Jofra Archer, who has not played international cricket since March 2023; Harry Brook, with withdrew from the India tour and IPL this year; and the uncapped Lancashire left-arm spinner Tom Hartley.

The England squad will fly to the Caribbean to defend their title on May 31. Before that, they host Pakistan for four T20Is on May 22 (at Headingley), 25 (Edgbaston), 28 (Cardiff), and 30 (The Oval).

The ECB release also stated: “Selected players, currently playing in the Indian Premier League, will return in time for the series against Pakistan, which gets underway at Headingley on Wednesday 22 May 2024”.

The league stage of the IPL finishes on Sunday, May 19. England players are likely to return home around that time. The playoffs begin with Qualifier 1 on Tuesday, May 21.

Archer, Duckett, Hartley, Wood, Brook, Jordan, and Rashid are not part of the 2024 IPL, but the others are. England captain Buttler opens the batting for the Rajasthan Royals and Salt for the Kolkata Knight Riders (he also keeps wicket); Curran is leading the Punjab Kings in absence of their injured captain Shikhar Dhawan, while Bairstow and Livingstone are his teammates; Jacks and Topley are crucial cogs in the Royal Challengers Bengaluru set-up; and Moeen plays for the Chennai Super Kings.
