Brandon King of West Indies goes down with an injury prior to going off retired-hurt during the ICC Men's T20 Cricket World Cup West Indies & USA 2024 Super Eight match between England and West Indies at Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium on June 19, 2024 in Gros Islet, Saint Lucia.

West Indies opener Brandon King retired hurt while batting during their Super Eights fixture against England today (June 19) in Saint Lucia.

After being asked to bat first, West Indies were off to a blazing start in a T20 World Cup where run-scoring has been difficult. They scored 54-0 in the powerplay but were jolted by an injury.

King seemed to pull a muscle in his groin while playing a shot against Sam Curran in the fifth over of the West Indies innings. He writhed in pain, lying on the ground. The physio attended to him, and after an examination, he was taken off the ground.

The right-hander was looking in fine touch during his 13-ball 23 stay. After failing to connect the ball at the start, a bat swap changed his luck. He hit a huge six off Reece Topley in the third over to kickstart his innings. King finished off the over with another four off the last ball. Against Jofra Archer in the next over, he slammed two consecutive boundaries off the third and fourth deliveries. He similarly started the fourth, slashing Curran over the third for another boundary.

The next ball was when he went down and was forced to leave the field. The batter was replaced by Nicholas Pooran, who scored 36 off 32 before falling to Archer in the 16th over.

West Indies entered the Super Eights stage unbeaten after beating Afghanistan comprehensively in their last group-stage match. Meanwhile, England were in a tricky position and had to rely on net run rate after losing to Australia heavily and their game against Scotland got called off.
