Watch: Virat Kohli and Shakib Al Hasan got involved in a playful conversation during the 2022 T20 World Cup match at the Adelaide Oval.
After Shakib opted to bowl in a crucial match for both sides, Hasan Mahmud dropped Rohit Sharma before having him caught off his own bowling. Virat Kohli (64 not out in 44 balls) and KL Rahul (50 in 32) then added 67 for the second wicket before Suryakumar Yadav (30 in 16) exploded in a flurry of boundaries. Mahmud also got Hardik Pandya in the 16th over.
Dinesh Karthik, the new batter, then gave Kohli the strike with a single. Kohli glanced Mahmud for four, and the batters ran a single each to bring Kohli back on strike for the last ball.
Mahmud had got Pandya earlier in the over with a short-pitched ball. When he bounced again, Kohli tried to keep the pull on air, but the ball was too high for the shot. As the top-edge flew towards square leg, Kohli gestured at leg-umpire Chris Brown, requesting a no-ball for the second bouncer of the over. It was unnecessary, for Marais Erasmus had already signalled a no-ball at the bowler’s end.
Shakib came up to Kohli at this point for a conversation. On air, Harsha Bhogle suggested that Shakib might have reminded Kohli that it was better to leave these decisions to the umpires. Kohli and Shakib had a quick conversation that ended in smiles from both parties.
Kohli batted through the innings to help India finish on 184-6. At the time of writing, Bangladesh are 14-0 in two overs.
