Facing New Zealand in their Group 1 game, Buttler led from the front with a blistering knock, scoring seven fours and two sixes in all. Among the sixes was a cracking cross-batted swat off Boult which sailed over the sightscreen.

At that point Buttler was on 65 off 42, having batted through a flurry of wickets to remain at the crease. The third delivery of the 17th over, bowled by Boult, pitched in the back-of-length region but didn’t quite jump off the surface. It sat up for Buttler to attack it – the opener stretched out his arms and gave the ball a mighty wallop, sending it behind the sightscreen, and taking him into the 70s for the first time in 2022. He remained in the middle until the 19th over, and was the second-last wicket to fall, as England ended up on 179-6.

The stroke off Boult was widely appreciated, with some drawing comparisons with Virat Kohli’s “nigh-on impossible” hit over bowler Haris Rauf’s head during the India-Pakistan match last month.
