Watch: The final over between Bangladesh and Zimbabwe descended into chaos. The Tigers, though, did just enough in the end to eke out a vital victory.
Zimbabwe, chasing 151, needed 16 runs off the final over to seal victory. Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan handed the ball over to Mosaddek Hossain, with pacers Mustafizur Rahman and Taskin Ahmed having bowled out their quota. Ryan Burl and Brad Evans were the batters at the crease for Zimbabwe. The first ball Mosaddek bowled was fired into Burl’s pads. He swung wildly but could only manage a leg bye. Off the second ball of the over, Mosaddek dismissed Evans, with the latter holing out to deep mid-wicket.
Richard Ngarava came out to bat next. Like Burl earlier in the over, he had a mighty swing at a length ball on the stumps. Fortunately for Zimbabwe, the ball richocheted off the thigh pad and raced past short third man for four. A ball later, Mosaddek erred in line and was thumped over the deep backward square leg fence, reducing the equation to five runs required off two balls. Ngarava got out the very next ball, though, when he failed to connect with his ambitious lofted shot over long off, with wicket-keeper Nurul Hasan effecting a stumping.
With five runs required off the final ball, it seemed Mosaddek had bowled the perfect delivery. He slanted the ball across Blessing Muzarabani and the latter could only connect with fresh air. The Bangladesh players celebrated and then even indulges in handshakes with their opponents. In fact, almost everyone had walked off the ground, thinking Bangladesh had won, only to see the umpire signal a no-ballbecause Nurul had collected the final ball in front of the stumps.
Muzarabani had to put his pads back on and had to face the final ball, with four required for victory. Luckily for Bangladesh, Mosaddek held his nerve again. He bowled a ball that was beyond his swinging arc, helping Bangladesh seal a famous win. This T20 World Cup has seen plenty of extraordinary games: this one was an easy addition to the list.
