Watch: Rahmanullah Gurbaz produced an extraordinary lofted check-drive that sailed over bowler Kasun Rajitha’s head for six during Afghanistan’s T20 World Cup encounter against Sri Lanka.
Afghanistan had gotten off to a sedate start at the Gabba in Brisbane, managing only eight runs in their opening 2.3 overs. At this point, Gurbaz decided to take matters into his own hands. He gave Rajitha the charge, and crunched a length delivery over the bowler’s head for six.
He then held his pose for the cameras and admired his shot as it sailed over the fence. On air, Michael Atherton exclaimed: “He has treated this with absolute disdain, that is a lovely shot.”
“That is one for the cameraman,” chimed in Nasser Hussain.
Gurbaz played his part to perfection in the powerplay, guiding Afghanistan to 42. However, on the first ball of the seventh over, he was castled by Lahiru Kumara for a 24-ball 28. By then, he had laid a solid foundation for Afghanistan. And, he had produced one of the shots of the tournament.
Gurbaz’s 28 was the highest score of the Afghan innings. They finished on 144-8 as Wanindu Hasaranga returned outstanding figures of 4-0-13-3. He dismissed Usman Ghani, Rashid Khan, and Mujeeb Ur Rahman. Both teams need to win this match to stay in the hunt for semi-final berths.
