Watch: Ireland’s Barry McCarthy was involved in an unbelievable fielding effort by the boundary rope, saving a six after he leapt up to his left and pushed the ball back in with both hands against Australia in the 2022 T20 World Cup.
The second ball of the 15th over of Australia’s innings was a slower delivery outside off from Mark Adair to Marcus Stoinis. The big-hitter lofted the ball towards long-on, and it appeared that it was flying over the rope, but McCarthy had other plans.
The Ireland seam bowler sprinted to his left, timed his jump to perfection, stretched backwards and plucked out the ball with his left hand. Aware that he could be falling over the ropes. McCarthy had the presence of mind to throw the ball back into the field mid-air, preventing a six being scored. His efforts were lauded by the Australia players Adam Zampa and Matthew Wade and left the commentators gushing. It also left him breathless, with the physio coming on to check up on him.
“We’ve seen some obscene fielding efforts this World Cup and that, you have to say, is probably at the top of the list,” said Isa Guha.
Australia finished their innings at 179-5, with McCarthy also starring with the ball, picking up 3-29 in his four overs.
