Watch: Against Ireland at the Gabba in Brisbane, Mitchell Marsh lofted Fionn Hand for the second-biggest six of the Super 12 at the T20 World Cup so far.
Ireland struck soon after Andy Balbirnie won the toss and opted to field in this near-must-win match for both sides. With Mark Adair inside the circle at fine-leg, David Warner decided to turn the short-pitched ball from Barry McCarthy towards his direction. Unfortunately, he picked out Adair with pinpoint precision.
Mitchell Marsh joined his captain Aaron Finch, and the pair took Australia to 38-1 at the end of the powerplay. Balbirnie then introduced Hand into the attack, who had caused a stir by clean bowling Ben Stokes earlier in the tournament.
Hand began with a yorker that Finch pushed to long-on for a single. Marsh had a swing at the second ball, but was beaten. The third ball was on the stumps, perhaps on a good length, and Marsh swung again. This time he connected with it beautifully, and the ball soared over the mid-wicket fence, into the top tier of the Gabba. At 102 metres, this is now the joint second-biggest six of the Super 12 (David Miller had hit 104 metres away against India, while Finch made it to 102 against New Zealand) and the joint fifth-biggest of the World Cup.
Hand took the pace off the next ball, and Marsh could not connect with his cut. The next ball was a wide. Hand followed with a slower ball outside off again, only to meet the fate of the third ball. However, at 86 metres, this was not quite as humongous.
McCarthy soon got Marsh, for a 22-ball 28. At the time of writing, Australia were 134-3 in 15 overs.
