Watch: A combination of poor judgement and slippery studs led to West Indies opener Johnson Charles’ chaotic run out during his side’s T20 World Cup fixture against Zimbabwe in Hobart.
Playing in the First Round Group B match, Charles top-scored in West Indies’ total of 153-7 with a 36-ball 45. However, his dismissal kickstarted a middle-order collapse as the West Indies slipped from 97-3 to 101-6. A late flourish from Akeal Hosein, helped along by Rovman Powell, carried them past 150.
West Indies had moved to 97-3 with a ball remaining in the 13th over when Powell cut Sean Williams to backward point. A single seemed unlikely, but Powell briefly stepped out of his crease, looking at his batting partner indecisively. Charles, however, had made up his mind, and set off at full steam. When a seemingly unbothered Powell looked to return to safety, Charles attempted to stop and turn, but lost his footing in the process. He lay sprawled by the side of the pitch, bat out of his hand and all, and could only look on helplessly as Williams received a good, flat throw from Tony Munyonga and promptly took out the bails.
Powell kept staring at Charles in disbelief, even as the latter recovered his bat and started walking back. Sikandar Raza kept the pressure on with two more wickets in the next over, but Powell and Hosein eventually took West Indies to a respectable score.
