Despite winning their first two matches (and winning three matches out of five), India did not make it to the final of the 2022 Asia Cup. It was the first time in eight years that India did not win the trophy. Of course, India were without two key bowlers – Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel – and lost Ravindra Jadeja midway. On the other hand, despite being at full strength, India’s batting disappointed at times.

India have not won the T20 World Cup since the inaugural edition, in South Africa in 2007, though they made it to the final in Bangladesh in 2014. However, they do have a 7-4 record in Australia in the Twenty20 Internationals (despite losing the first two matches), all of them against the host nation, and will back themselves to do well again.

In Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, India have two of the greatest Twenty20 bowlers of all time, while Suryakumar Yadav’s rise and Virat Kohli’s return to form may address some of India’s batting problems from the last edition. Hardik Pandya has had a golden year so far, but his form and class will both be put to a test as stern as any in Australia.

India are pitted with Pakistan, Bangladesh, and South Africa in Group 2 of the tournament, where they will be joined by two teams from the qualifiers. Ahead of that, they will play two warm-up matches, against Australia and New Zealand at the Gabba.
