In 2022, defending champions Australia will host the T20 World Cup for the first time. They were supposed to host the T20 World Cup in 2020, which had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This time, they have been pitted in Group 1 of the Super 12s alongside Afghanistan, England, and New Zealand. They will be joined by the the team that tops Group A and the team that finishes second in Group B of the first round.
Australia have had an excellent 2022 so far. They beat Sri Lanka 4-1 at home and 2-1 in Sri Lanka. Between the two series, they beat won the lone Twenty20 International of the Pakistan tour, in Lahore. Despite the absence of David Warner, Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Marsh, and Marcus Stoinis, Australia managed to take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series in India.
Australia are among the favourites to win the T20 World Cup this year. If they manage to do that, Australia will become the first team to defend their title, and the second (after the West Indies, in 2012 and 2016) to win it twice. Ahead of the World Cup, however, Australia will play a warm-up matches, against India at the Gabba.
