India have played 32 T20Is this year, 10 more than any other side in the world. They have won 23 of these and lost eight, which gives them a win-loss ratio of 2.875 – the second-best among teams featuring in the 2022 World Cup. They have seven out of eight bilateral series this year, drawing the other, against South Africa at home. Their only low came in the Asia Cup, and even there they won three times and lost twice to finish third.
India played their first warm-up match against Australia, at the Gabba in Brisbane. KL Rahul and Suryakumar Yadav’s fifties took them to 186-7, but Australia seemed on course. They needed 17 in the last two overs with six wickets in hand, which came down to seven from four balls. Then the hosts somehow ended up losing four wickets and with that, the match. India will now play New Zealand in their final warm-up match, at the same venue.
Of the teams at this World Cup, only New Zealand (12 wins, three defeats) have a better win-loss ratio than India’s in 2022. They beat Ireland, Scotland, Netherlands, and West Indies before finishing runners-up in a tri-series at home, which also featured Pakistan and Bangladesh.
While India were busy battling Australia at the Gabba, New Zealand were being dismantled by the South Africans at the Allan Border Field in the same city. Barring Martin Guptill (26), Glenn Phillips (20), and Michael Bracewell (11), none of their batters reached double figures as they folded for 98. South Africa won inside 12 overs.
The India-New Zealand contest will be played at the Gabba alongside a Bangladesh-South Africa clash at the Allan Border Field. These will conclude the warm-up matches.
