Former England captain Nasser Hussain perfectly predicted Babar Azam’s dismissal before the T20 World Cup final.
In the build-up to the game, Hussain was quizzed on what would be England’s best option to keep Babar quiet. The Pakistan captain struggled in the Super 12s stage of the T20 World Cup, but returned to form with a half-century in the semi-final, while his consistency makes him a vital wicket in his side’s batting line-up.
Until the final, Rashid had also had a quiet tournament. While he had excelled in victories over Sri Lanka and India, he only had two wickets to his name, and with Babar possessing an excellent average against spin in T20 cricket, Rashid looked an unlikely choice to get out the imposing opener.
However, Hussain backed Rashid, considering the success he has enjoyed against the Pakistan skipper previously. “Rashid has got Babar out three times, two of those with a wrong’un,” he said. “A little bit like the India game. If it is not swinging and if Babar is going, I wouldn’t mind having a little look at Adil because Babar Azam, unbelievably as a Pakistan player, hasn’t always picked Rashid.”
England paid heed to Hussain’s advice and introduced Rashid in the eighth over once Babar had established himself at the crease. Hussain’s words were proved correct with scary accuracy.
The Pakistan captain got through Rashid’s first over but was unable to deny him second time out. Rashid bowled a superb googly on a length on off stump that Babar did not pick. The ball spun back into the Pakistan skipper and cramped him for room, forcing him to tamely chip the ball straight back to the bowler. The wicket, in the context of the game, was crucial.
