The match is the second game of the Super 12 stage of the competition, getting underway at the Optus Stadium in Perth after Australia take on New Zealand in the opening fixture.
England come into the tournament as one of the favourites to make it to the final having just claimed series victories over Pakistan and Australia. They will be without frontline seamer Reece Topley after he sustained an ankle injury in training before the side’s last warm-up fixture. He has been replaced in the squad by left-arm pacer Tymal Mills.
Afghanistan have had a bumpier road than England in the lead up to the tournament, finishing fourth in the Asia Cup but registering victories over Bangladesh and eventual winners Sri Lanka in the process. Coached by former England batter Jonathan Trott and led by the experienced figure of Mohammad Nabi, Afghanistan certainly shouldn’t be an opposition England should take lightly.
