Sri Lankan leg-spinner Wanindu Hasaranga took the second hat-trick of the 2021 T20 World Cup, following Ireland’s Curtis Campher, as he ripped through South Africa’s middle order.

With the match in the balance, Hasaranga first removed Aiden Markram for 19 with a googly that ripped back and bowled the right-hander with the last ball of the 15th over. Hasaranga then returned to the attack two overs later with South Africa needing 31 off the remaining three overs and set batter Temba Bavuma at the crease on 46.

However, in the space of two balls both Bavuma and Dwaine Pretorius had been dismissed. Bavuma was well caught on the square leg boundary before Pretorius failed to get enough on Hasaranga’s following delivery and was caught at long-on for a first-ball duck.

The hat-trick appeared to have swung the match in Sri Lanka’s favour and when Hasaranga finished his over he did so with figures of 3-20 and South Africa needing 25 off 12 balls.

But a magical spell of death hitting from David Miller saw South Africa get 15 off the last over to win the match and seriously dent Sri Lanka’s chances of qualification to the semi-finals.
