Playing a virtual knockout game, with the winners qualifying for the Super 12s, Namibia showed signs of nerves when they allowed Ireland to steal three runs when there should have been none. Simi Singh, facing the last ball of the innings from David Wiese, ran a risky single after mistiming a slower delivery back to the bowler. Wiese, who could have effected a run-out at the striker’s end, was unable to nail the throw and ended up conceding another run as the ball ran wide off the keeper’s gloves.
Simi along with Craig Young then came back for a third after the fielders messed up what was an easy run-out chance. With Simi well short of the crease, Namibia could have had their ninth wicket of the day, but the throw from the keeper’s end to the bowler’s end was not up to the mark, which eventually allowed Ireland to steal a third, leaving the on-air commentators in disbelief.
There was some canny running too, with Singh staying put at the striker’s end before Young made his ground, reducing the possibility of a dismissal at that end, and leaving Singh in a footrace with the ball to complete the third.
Nonetheless, Namibia restricted Ireland to just 125-8 and chased down the target in 18.3 overs to cause a major upset and advance to the next stage of the event. They are placed in Group 2 in the Super 12, alongside India, Scotland, Afghanistan, Pakistan, and New Zealand.
