Off the first delivery of Australia’s 159-run chase, Warner stepped out of his crease, trying to take on Tim Southee over the in-field. The ball flew off the edge of his bat, even as Warner began running, expecting the ball to fly past Guptill at second slip.

The New Zealand opener, however, dived full length to his left, brilliantly clutching the ball with one hand while horizontal to the ground.

The catch had shades of Guptill’s extraordinary effort against the same team during the 2019 World Cup, when he took another left-handed stunner to dismiss Steve Smith down the leg-side.

While it was a warm-up game, the dismissal continued Warner’s underwhelming form in 2021; this year, he averages 24.4 at a strike-rate of 107.7 in T20s (all games coming in the IPL). After being stripped of captaincy, he was benched for the majority of the second leg of the tournament by his team Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Australia begin their T20 World Cup campaign against South Africa on October 23, while New Zealand’s first fixture is against Pakistan on the 26th. Here’s the complete list of fixtures for the tournament.
