Having lost their tournament opener to Scotland, Bangladesh needed to beat Oman to keep their Super 12 prospects alive going into their final group game against Papua New Guinea.
Oman’s impressive seam attack – that includes former Pakistan Under-19 speedster Fayyaz Butt – got the hosts off to a terrific start, reducing Bangladesh to 21-2 in the fifth over to bring the Tigers’ star all-rounder to the crease.
Shakib and his partner Mohammad Naim initially struggled to find any sort of fluency and take their side’s run-rate much above six runs per over. That was until Shakib hit his stride in the 12th over, taking consecutive boundaries off Mohammad Nadeem’s first two deliveries before Naim struck a maximum later in the over. That momentum was soon pinned back when the former Bangladesh captain was run out by a brilliant Aaqib Ilyas direct hit to dismiss Shakib for a 29-ball 42.
Shakib, who had dabbed the ball behind square into the off-side, was caught well short of his ground by a superb piece of fielding. Despite the brilliance of Ilyas’ effort, the run out was not necessarily a foregone conclusion with Shakib drawing criticism from on-air commentators Alan Wilkins and Anjum Chopra.
“He literally gives up,” exclaimed Wilkins on commentary before noting that Shakib’s lack of effort may have been to do with how far he was from making his ground. Chopra, a former India women’s captain, then pointed out that Shakib was looking over his shoulder while making the run, a move that would have inhibited his ability to run full speed. On second viewing, Wilkins agreed with Chopra.
“What would have slowed him down was turning his head round and looking at what Aaqib Ilyas was doing with the ball. He keeps looking behind him so he was not [running at] fully pace anyway. But Oman don’t care about that – Aaqib Ilyas who is a civil engineer, engineers a fantastic run out.”
