Chasing a low target of 200 on a tricky Chepauk pitch, India’s worst nightmare came true. They were reeling at 2-3 after an opening burst from Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. Rohit Sharma, Ishan Kishan and Shreyas Iyer returned to the hut without opening their account. Australia’s new-ball bowlers were breathing fire. They relived the horrors of their semi-final crash-out against New Zealand in 2019 when they were reduced to 5-3 at the start.

The shaky start meant India would need another Kohli special to save their day. Kohli started carefully, trying to manoeuvre his team past the onslaught. On the third ball of the seventh over, Josh Hazlewood steamed in to hit a bouncer. Kohli was batting on 12*(26) and looked to break the shackles after two dot balls. He attempted to pull the ball, but it got big on him. The ball ballooned up in the air as fielder Mitchell Marsh looked to pouch it.

India was on the brink of losing four wickets, but Marsh made a mess of the chance while sliding across. The star batter was given a lifeline. Since the dropped catch, the duo of Kohli and KL Rahul has added a partnership in excess of 50.
