India were sent in to bat after losing the toss in Lucknow today. This was the first time in six games that they batted first at the World Cup, and it didn’t start well for them.
Shubman Gill was dismissed by Chris Woakes in the fourth over by a cracking nip-backer that sneaked through the gap between the bat and the pad to clean up his stumps. Virat Kohli, averaging 118 in the 2023 World Cup before today, came out to bat at No.3 with hopes riding on him.
However, England were smart with their plans. They tied Kohli down, not allowing him to get off the mark. Despite connecting a couple of cracking cover-drives, he was unable to find the gaps as frustration visibly grew.
Eventually, on the fifth ball of the seventh over, he ran out of patience, when Willey bowled a length ball around off stump. Kohli stepped out and looked to go over mid-off but extra bounce, and the fact that he did not reach the pitch of the ball, meant that the ball hit the splice of the bat and lobbed up in the air only for Ben Stokes to pouch it safely.
This turned out to be Kohli’s first duck in World Cup history, both ODI and T20I World Cups combined.
India fell into deeper trouble a few overs later as Shreyas Iyer fell to the short ball once again, top-edging a pull to mid-on. After 18 overs, India’s score read 67-3.
