Van der Dussen reached his second century of the 2023 World Cup off 101 balls against New Zealand in Pune. He shared a mammoth stand with Quinton de Kock, who also scored a hundred, taking South Africa to 266-2 in the 44th over. Jimmy Neesham was on to bowl, with New Zealand facing limited options with the ball at the death following a mid-innings injury to Matt Henry.

Neesham sent down a ball outside off stump to Van der Dussen, who mowed it straight down the ground. Boult was positioned at deep cover and ran round the boundary to try and execute the catch. He put in a desperate dive and got both hands to the ball, but could only tip it over the boundary for a six.

The incident evoked memories of a similar incident from the 2019 World Cup final, where Boult attempted to catch a shot down the ground from Ben Stokes, but stepped on the boundary rope to concede six instead. Neesham was the bowler on that occasion as well.

Van der Dussen added insult to injury from the following ball, heaving another six over long on, this time well clear of any fielders and directly into the stands. He was eventually bowled by Tim Southee in the 48th over for 133 off 118 balls.
