India won the toss and elected to bowl against New Zealand at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala. Hardik Pandya missed the match with an injury, and India replaced him with Suryakumar Yadav.

To fortify the depleted bowling attack, they also drafted in Mohammed Shami for Shardul Thakur. Like Suryakumar, Shami is also playing his first match of the edition.

India opened bowling with Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj. In the fourth over, Siraj pitched one up on the middle stump, and Devon Conway, yet to open his account, flicked the ball but could not keep it on the ground.

The ball went to the right of Shreyas Iyer, stationed between square-leg and mid-wicket. Iyer dived to his right and took the catch with both hands. As part of the celebrations, Iyer gestured being gifted with a medal.

For the World Cup, T Dilip, the Indian fielding coach, has initiated an award for the best fielder of the match. So far, the medal has gone to Virat Kohli (against Australia), Shardul Thakur (Afghanistan), KL Rahul (Pakistan), and Ravindra Jadeja (Bangladesh).

Despite doing an excellent job on the field, Iyer is yet to win it. The hint was obvious.
