Defending an underwhelming total of 191, Pakistan’s bowlers were taken to the cleaners. Rohit Sharma was the lynchpin of the opening onslaught, hitting multiple sixes and fours off Pakistan’s strike bowlers. He tonked Haris Rauf for two sixes in his opening over, off which he took 14 runs.
Rohit played a whirlwind knock of 86 (63) to take the game out of Pakistan’s grasp. This came on the back of a thumping 63-ball century against Afghanistan.
The Pakistan bowlers were visibly frustrated as the India batters showed no mercy. After Virat Kohli departed for 16 (18), Shreyas Iyer came to the crease at No.4. When Rauf came to bowl his second over on the trot, Rohit took a single off the first delivery and gave the strike to his partner. Shreyas played three consecutive dots.
On the fourth ball of the over, Rauf clocked 140 kph. Shreyas drove back the ball to Rauf off the inside-half of the bat. The Pakistan pacer threw the ball in full force to keeper Rizwan despite Shreyas remaining inside the crease. The right-hander was startled by the return throw and flinched away from the ball. The incident riled up the crowd at the Narendra Modi Stadium as a chorus of 132,000 spectators booed Rauf.
