Winning the toss, South Africa chose to bat. Aiden Markram led the South Africans for a second consecutive game as Temba Bavuma is yet to recover from the stomach bug he caught ahead of the previous game against England. Lungi Ngidi, too, was replaced by Lizaad Williams. A fit Shakib Al Hasan, meanwhile, was back for Bangladesh, for Towhid Hridoy.

Mustafizur Rahman and Mehidy Hasan Miraz opened the bowling for Bangladesh. Reeza Hendricks and Quinton de Kock started well. De Kock, in particular, looked in good touch. However, just as the opening partnership was starting to settle in and look dangerous, Shoriful Islam, who came in first-change, produced a beautiful delivery to get rid of Hendricks.

Bowling from over the wicket to the right-handed Hendricks, Shoriful was able to jag the ball back in very late as it pitched around middle on a good length and cut Hendricks in half, dismantling his off and middle stumps in the process.

Shoriful celebrated the wicket with an elaborate dance step close to the striker’s end, and Hendricks departed for 12 from 19 balls, failing to continue his good form from the last game.

Mehidy trapped Rassie van der Dussen plumb in front in the very next over to peg South Africa back further as they slipped from 33-0 to 36-2. By the end of 20 overs, South Africa’s score read 99-2 as Aiden Markram and de Kock looked to rebuild the innings.
