Bangladesh chose to field after winning the toss at the Himachal Pradesh Cricket Association Stadium in Dharamsala. Afghanistan got off to a good start, with Ibrahim Zadran scoring 22 off 25 and Rahmanullah Gurbaz scoring 47 off 62, but they began to self-destruct midway into their innings.

From 112-2 in 24.3 overs, Afghanistan were bowled out for 156, adding just 44 for their last seven wickets. The two Bangladesh spinners, Shakib Al Hasan and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, were the destroyers-in-chief, picking three wickets each.

Shakib got three of the Afghan top five out, including Ibrahim, Rahmat Shah, and Najibullah Zadran. Najibullah’s dismissal was especially noteworthy for the way Shakib completely foxed the left-hander.

Bowling from over the wicket, Shakib delivered a slider that pitched on middle stump. Najibullah played for the turn but the ball went straight on with the arm, going past his outside edge and crashing into middle and leg, uprooting the leg stump in the process.

Shakib bowled eight overs to finish with figures of 3-30. Mehidy, on the other hand, finished with 3-25 from his nine overs. Six of the bottom seven of Afghanistan’s batting lineup didn’t cross ten, while every Bangladeshi bowler who bowled more than one over picked at least one wicket.

In response, Bangladesh got off to a shaky start, losing both openers Tanzid Hasan and Litton Das within the first ten overs. Tanzim was run out following a spectacular direct hit from Najibullah, while Litton was bowled by Fazalhaq Farooqi.
