Van der Merwe represented South Africa in 13 ODIs for a year from 2009 and started playing for the Netherlands 10 years later. He first played for the Dutch in 2019 and was picked to play for the side in the ongoing World Cup.

Walking out to bat at No.9 with the score at 140-7 in Dharamsala against the Proteas, van der Merwe went on to make a crucial 19-ball 29, with the help of three fours. He also hit a six during his knock off a helicopter shot against Gerald Coetzee’s short-of-a-length delivery.

He leaned back and played an upper cut over third man, with the bat completing a full rotation as the ball landed over the ropes.

Van der Merwe was eventually dismissed by Lungi Ngidi in the rain-curtailed game, but Netherlands carried on. From 141-7 at the end of the 34th over, they smashed 104-1 off the next nine, finishing with a competitive total of 245-8.
