Van der Merwe, a former South Africa international, had sparked a fightback with the bat earlier. Coming in with Netherlands 140-7, he smashed 14 off four Gerald Coetzee balls, including a spectacular helicopter upper-cut for six, to kickstart a renaissance. His side hit 104-1 off the last nine overs of the innings to put up a competitive 241-7 in the 43-over game.

That momentum carried into the field, with the Netherlands spinners – aided by a cracker from Paul van Meekeren – plundering four early wickets. After Aryan Dutt’s tight start, Colin Ackermann nicked off Quinton de Kock  and Van der Merwe ran through Temba Bavuma. Aiden Markram’s dismissal left the Proteas three down, and they were looking to Van der Dussen, their anchor, to provide some solidity.

That is not what they got, with the No.3 reverse-sweeping straight to the man in the in-field to leave his side 44-4.

South Africa have been one of the form sides at the World Cup, one of three sides to win their first three games, and putting up a world record score in their opening game. However, they have been upset by Netherlands before, with a shock defeat knocking them out of the 2022 T20 World Cup to Pakistan’s benefit.

Netherlands lost each of their first three clashes, despite showing flashes of promise. They are the only Associate side at the World Cup after stunning the likes of West Indies and Zimbabwe by progressing through the World Cup qualifier.
