Pakistan had built a strong foundation and were 110-1 before a mini-collapse reduced their potential of setting Afghanistan a big total. Abdullah Shafique was trapped lbw after making his second successive half-century and Mohammad Rizwan then fell cheaply to bring Saud Shakeel to the crease.

Shakeel started to build a steady partnership with Babar Azam, but took a while to get going scoring 11 off his first 24 balls. He then looked to attack, hitting a four off Mohammad Nabi before picking up another in the following over from Rashid.

In Nabi’s next over, he once again found the boundary, playing a reverse dab sweep behind square, with Mujeeb Ur Rahman unable to prevent the ball from reaching the rope. Shakeel then played out a dot before coming down the track to a shorter pitched ball from Nabi, looking to hit through midwicket.

However, he miscued the shot and skied it straight up in the air. Rashid had to pedal backwards rapidly in order to take the catch, which he managed to cling on to. He celebrated by throwing the ball away almost immediately, and with seeming anger into the turf. Afghanistan dropped two important catches in their previous match against New Zealand, which saw them lose a strong position.
