Cummins attended the customary pre-match presentation before the Trans-Tasman clash on October 27. One of the journalists threw a tricky question at the Australia skipper, asking his reaction to arch-nemesis England’s thumping loss against Sri Lanka.
“You mentioned close friends in other teams. I imagine you would have been heartbroken to see England suffer a defeat last night. What was your reaction to that given you have got them in a couple of games time?” the journalist enquired.
Cummins was caught off guard as he couldn’t hide his laugh when answering. He hesitantly shook his shoulders with a sheepish smile: “Yeah, it was sad to see. I don’t have much for it. ”
The last time Australia met England in the Ashes 2023, the former retained the urn. The series witnessed some fine performances, but on-field and off-field controversies ignited the rivalry more. From the debate over Baristow’s run-out to Australia reportedly skipping the post-Ashes drinks with their opponents only to have it afterwards in a bar, the 2023 edition had everything. The war of words hasn’t stopped, though it’s been a while since the completion of the series.
