Pakistan were going nowhere in their chase of 338 against England in their final match of the 2023 World Cup in Kolkata. Rizwan came to the crease when Pakistan had slipped to 10-2 in the third over of the innings, and built a steady partnership with Babar Azam.

However, having reached 36 off 51 balls, he decided the go after Moeen. He met Moeen’s first ball of the over with a front foot block, before advancing down the pitch and hacking the ball to cover off the next.

To Moeen’s third ball, he charged even further down the pitch and took a massive swipe across the line, missing completely. The ball crashed into the wicket to give England their fourth wicket, Babar having fallen previously for 38. After the ball had hit the stumps, Rizwan dramatically clutched his hamstring, spun around on one leg and collapsed heavily to the ground, clearly struggling with cramp.

On commentary, Ian Ward said: “There is a degree of painful comedy in that dismissal for Rizwan.”

This is not the first time Rizwan has theatrically complained of cramp in the tournament. When he made his remarkable century against Sri Lanka, he fell to floor several times and received extensive on field treatment. In the game against England, it took several minutes before Rizwan was able to get up and actually leave the field.
