New Zealand named a 15-member provisional team for the 2023 World Cup. Kane Williamson returned to lead the squad, with Tom Latham as his deputy.
New Zealand squad for 2023 World Cup:
Kane Williamson (c), Tom Latham (vc & wk), Devon Conway (wk), Glenn Phillips (wk), Trent Boult, Tim Southee, Mitchell Santner, Jimmy Neesham, Daryl Mitchell, Will Young, Mark Chapman, Rachin Ravindra, Lockie Ferguson, Ish Sodhi, Matt Henry.
New Zealand have never won the World Cup, but were defeated finalists in the last two editions, 2015 and 2019. In the latter, England beat them in the final at Lord’s on boundary count after the two teams were tied on scores, first in the match, then in the Super Over.
Despite not winning the tournament, they have won the most matches (53) after Australia (69), and have the fourth-best win-loss ratio in the history of the tournament, ahead of former champions West Indies, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka.
New Zealand are currently touring England for a four-match ODI series that stands at 1-1. They play England again on October 5, in the World Cup opener in Ahmedabad, in an encore of the first match of the 1996 edition.
New Zealand Cricket formally named the squad at the Papatoetoe High School in Auckland. Ish Sodhi, an alumnus of the school, is part of the unit.
As part of the squad announcement, Cricket New Zealand released a heartwarming video, where the squad members are introduced by their “number 1 fans” – their partners, their children, their parents, their grandparents.
