Rahmanullah Gurbaz hit eight fours and four sixes as he raced to 57-ball 80 after England opted to bowl. Afghanistan slid from 114-3 to 190-6 before Ikram Alikhil lifted them to 284. For England, Adil Rashid claimed 3-42 and Mark Wood 2-50.
Fazalhaq Farooqi then trapped Jonny Bairstow leg-before with the seventh ball of the England innings. Joe Root joined Dawid Malan, and leg-glanced the next ball for four.
In the eighth over, Mujeeb Ur Rahman pitched one up, then held back the length for the next two balls. The fourth ball was too short, and Root turned it to the fine-leg fence.
Mujeeb pitched up the next ball. Root played it but along the wrong line, and the ball beat the bat and crashed on to the stumps. Root walked back for 11, leaving England at 33-2.
Mohammad Nabi claimed Malan for 32 not too long afterwards. At the time of writing, England were 82-3 after 16 overs. They need another 203 in 204 balls.
