New Zealand struggled early on in a huge chase of 398 against India, losing Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra in the powerplay. However, a 181-run partnership between Williamson and Daryll Mitchell brought New Zealand back into contention.
Bumrah, who had been slightly off radar in his opening spell, was back on for his sixth over of the match. He conceded six runs off his first four balls, including a four which was heaved into the leg side by Mitchell. With Williamson on strike for the fourth ball, Bumrah bowled a slower ball outside off. Williamson looked to hit it hard through deep midwicket, but mistimed it straight to a waiting Shami on the ring.
The simple chance came to him at chest height and barely required him to move, but Shami got himself in a mess. He took his eyes off the ball and it slipped through his fingers, going over his shoulder and onto the ground behind him. Shami then had to run after the ball to field it as it ran away over the grass.
At the time of the drop, Williamson was on 52 and looked threatening. Although India still had plenty of runs on the board, with Williamson and Mitchell at the crease the threat was still there.
To make up for his mistake, Shami dismissed Williamson for 69 four overs later off the second ball of his second spell. He also struck again in the same over to dismiss Tom Latham and pull the game firmly back into India’s favour.
