India fought back against New Zealand during the back end of their innings, after Daryl Mitchell registered yet another century. The Black Caps had reached 243-4 in the 45th over batting first in the top of the table clash, before a flurry of wickets saw them bowled out for 273.

Shami was the main destroyer. Brought back on for the 48th over, he conceded three singles off his first three balls before sending down a brilliant delivery to Santner. Bowling round the wicket to the left-hander, Shami bowled the perfect yorker. Santner couldn’t get his bat down on the ball in time, and it cannoned into the base of off-stump after tailing in, uprooting it from the ground.

Henry was the next man out for New Zealand, who were at that point seven wickets down with 14 balls left to play. Shami sent down a delivery just as good to him first up. The ball swung into the right-hander and skidded through, finding the gap in between Henry’s bat and pad and crashing into leg stump, sending it cartwheeling several yards back.

Ferguson came out to face the hat-trick ball, but Shami couldn’t repeat his feat from the 2019 World Cup against Afghanistan. Ferguson managed to block out the attempted yorker and survived. In his final over, however, Shami secured his third ODI five-for, dismissing Mitchell with a brilliant catch from Virat Kohli.
